The Whistler Farmers’ Market is pleased to offer a summer employment opportunity for a community-minded youth. Under the training and mentorship of the Market Manager, our goal for this candidate is to have a rewarding employment experience with our organisation, develop new skills, connect to the community, and contribute to the success of our vibrant market.
Job/employee requirements
This position is made possible through the Canada Summer Jobs Grant Program, meaning that applicants must meet the following requirements:
Employment dates: 14 weeks starting as soon as possible (late May/early July)
Employee age: 15-30 years
Status in Canada: Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or of Refugee Status
Time commitment: 30-35 hours per week (must be available Sundays for the market, remaining hours are flexible)
Compensation: $22/hour
What you’ll be doing
This position works directly with the Market Manager and involves a flexible work-from-home component and attendance at weekly markets. As the Event Coordinator, you will assist with:
Coordinating with vendors, community partners and performers
Managing logistics, including vendor set-up, traffic flow, and event layout
Assisting in marketing and promoting the market events through social media content and website updates
Ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for vendors and visitors
Providing on-site event support to vendors, customers and market manager
Supporting with tasks such as communications, research, reporting, and administration
Skills you’ll use and develop
Event Operations – you’ll learn the ropes on how markets come alive and function smoothly
Marketing and communications – you’ll promote us on social media (Facebook and Instagram), updating website content (Squarespace), use our email platforms (Constant Contact).
Software – you’ll learn and use our event management platform (Marketspread)
Planning and budgeting – you’ll support our musicians and manage our entertainment budget
Partner development and community connections – you’ll connect with Whistler Community Services Society, The Whistler Food Bank, AWARE Whistler, and more.
Relationship development – you’ll come to know all the vendors and will play an important part in supporting them, their businesses and telling their stories.
Program coordination – you’ll lead the Farmers Market Nutrition Coupon Program, which helps lower-income families, pregnant women and seniors get access to fresh produce.
Storytelling and creativity – you’ll create content to promote the market and its vendors and educate about local food systems.
Critical thinking and problem solving – this comes with the territory in events!
